Research Focus: My research addresses the complex relationships betweenforces of structural change and the agency of individual actors tonegotiate and shape these changes at the local level. Specifically, myresearch will examine how highland minority women are (re)shaping theirlivelihoods, their household and community relationships (gender, generational, class and ethnic), and their identities in response topost-colonial socio-political and economic changes taking place inhighland Northern Vietnam. Combined factors such as the increasingcommercialization of the rural economy due to the Socialist Government's recent turn to market liberalization, the subsequent boomin tourism, the flood of industrially manufactured goods from acrossthe border with China, the increasing migration of ethnic Vietnamesefrom the lowlands, and the growing interest of development agencies inthis area, are having profound impacts on highland minorities' livesand livelihoods, likely with significant gendered implications. At the same time, actors cannot be understood as simply passive in the face ofsuch forces; it is important to also recognize the ways in which peoplecreatively find opportunities and rework certain aspects to theiradvantage. In order to frame and examine such interactions, this studywill look at the particular case of women's participation in marketexchange and production in the Sa Pa highland marketplace.
